Birkenhead generosity in lockdown

Make it Happen is a community shop and hub in the heart of Birkenhead and is open six days a week to the whole community. During the lockdown they have been able to remain open and supply the local community with essential goods, as well as offer a listening ear.

Over the last couple of weeks, with the generosity of hundreds of people, Make it Happen received over 1000 bags of donations. With the support of Wirral Methodist Housing Association who provided an empty shop, the team have been able to restock the shop four times over and have sorted, re-donated, and delivered over 150 bags to four other community shops to ensure they have fresh stock for reopening.

Amy Butterworth, Cheif Executive Officer of Make it Happen Birkenhead, says: "Food has been a huge part of the Make It Happen operation working closely with our friends across the borough such as Feeding Birkenhead, Supporting Wirral, and FED up Wallasey to ensure we receive the surplus food. We have also been blessed thanks to the support of many people, to be in a position to purchase additional food for our Social Supermarket to keep up with demand for those who can come and safely shop with dignity, in line with government guidance.

"The work would not of been able to continue if it was not for the commitment of Make It Happens Team and care of Community Action Wirral to recruit additional volunteers. With over 2050 hours dedicated to Making it Happen, the community are very happy we stayed open to provide the essentials and be that listening ear."
