Transforming Lives Together

What is Transforming Lives Together?

TLT is an exciting 'Joint Venture' between the Church Urban Fund and the Diocese of Chester. We are part of a network of similar ventures around England which enables us to improve access to resources and to make local work more effective by sharing learning.

Our main aim is to encourage and support churches to engage with people living in their local communities to enable spiritual and social transformation. We see Christian mission as consisting of both social action and evangelism. We focus on responding to issues of poverty, inequality, social isolation and loneliness. We aim to act as a catalyst and seek to inspire and shape a movement to tackle these issues in the Diocese. We support Christians to work relationally with individuals and groups so that the vision is people driven not project driven.

We work in partnership with churches of different denominations and also with the voluntary and statutory sectors.

Our work includes two main initiatives which respond to food poverty and social isolation and loneliness. The first is 'Filling the Gap', a network of churches delivering food and activities during the school holidays aimed specifically at families in receipt of free school meals but open to anyone. We have 12 Filling the Gap churches across the Diocese so far.

The second initiative is 'Places of Welcome', these are churches, libraries, community centres etc. which provide a weekly welcome to people from all backgrounds, ages, economic and personal circumstances to meet, have refreshments and chat. They are safe spaces to make friends. There are currently 35 Places of Welcome across the Diocese.
