Prison Chaplaincy

The Criminal Justice Group is made up of a group of people who are interested in the justice system. A range of ex prison guards, clergy and laity. The group aims to support prison chaplains in the two prisons situated in our diocese (Thorn Cross and Styal women’s prison) and to help and resource parishes in welcoming ex-offenders into their churches.

Each year the group host an event to educate parishes about the prison community and how they can help. In 2019 the group held an extremely successful prisoners artwork exhibition ‘Journey into Light’. It was launched at the Cathedral in October 2018 and travelled around the diocese in churches, schools and churches of other denominations. In totally it visited over 40 locations. The event concluded in Stockport in December 2019 where the group was able to make a substantial donation of both gifts and donations to each prison.

2020 has been quite a different year for the group. Although they have non longer been able to meet face to face or arrange a large event, they continue to support the prison chaplains by on line means and through the Mothers Union.

The Group hope that they can arrange an event in 2021 that will explain and explore the role of a Prison Chaplain.

Each year beginning on the 2nd Sunday in October Churches are encouraged to raise awareness of Prisoners and the Work of Prison Chaplains and to pray for the needs of all affected by prisons; prisoners, their families, victims of crime, those working in in the criminal justice system and Prison Chaplines. More information about Prisons week can be found here

The group is currently chaired by Vincent Whitehead who has been a member of the group for over 20 years and chaired the group for 10 years. We are always looking for ways to expand the group and we would love to hear from you if you are interested in joining the group. Please contact
