New Warden of Readers

We are pleased to announce that the new Warden of Readers in the Diocese will be the Revd Vivien Gisby. Vivien is the part-time Incumbent of St John’s Weston, in Runcorn, and the Warden of Pastoral Workers in the Diocese, and will continue to hold these existing roles alongside her new responsibility. As Warden of Readers, Vivien will have overall responsibility for developing the profile of reader ministry, and recruitment, selection and pastoral care of readers. She will work closely with the Society of Readers, the network of Assistant Wardens and Deanery Sub-Wardens and with Liz Shercliff, the Director of Studies for Reader Ministry. Vivien is a former reader herself, and so is very familiar with this area of ministry. She replaces John Knowles, the previous Warden of Readers, who stood down at the end of 2016.

Welcoming Vivien to her new role, Michael Gilbertson, the Archdeacon of Chester and Chair of the Committee for Ministry, said ‘I am very pleased indeed that Vivien is taking on this important role in the diocese. The Diocese of Chester has a very well developed and thriving reader ministry, and Vivien is very well placed to take on this responsibility at an exciting time when the church nationally and locally is placing particular emphasis on how the whole people of God, lay and ordained, can minister together for the growth of his kingdom. Reader ministry has a very distinctive part to play in that overall picture and I look forward very much to working with Vivien as we seek to build on the strong foundations which are already in place, and foster the growth and development of reader ministry for the future.’
