Lent40 encourages daily Bible reading

Churches across the Diocese are running YBible events. Canon David Taylor, Team Rector of Congleton, shares news of their recent events…

As part of the YBible initiative members of the Team Parish of Congleton were invited to take on a Rule of Life for the 40 days of Lent.  70 church members purchased the book "Reflections for Lent" (Church House Publishing) and committed themselves to setting aside time in Lent for prayer and Bible Reading.  "Reflections for Lent" offered a short service of Morning Prayer or Compline, readings from Jeremiah and John's Gospel and a daily psalm.  Each day there was a reflection on the Gospel reading, some of which were written by Bishop Libby.

Participants were invited to choose from this menu to suit their own circumstances.  Additionally there were weekly Lent40 Support Groups throughout Lent for those who wanted to share what they were learning and to encourage one another.  Bishop Libby launched Lent 40 on Ash Wednesday, spoke of her own Rule of Life and promised to share the challenge with us throughout Lent.

Other YBible initiatives have included:

  • a monthly article in the parish magazine in which church members have written about their favourite Bible passage
  • a greater use of the psalms in public worship
  • assemblies in our church school on the theme of "God's Big Book"
