Understanding Spiritual Abuse

Date: 23rd May 2019

Time: 10:00 - 15:30

There is a form of psychological and spiritual abuse which is increasingly identified as “spiritual abuse”. This is a training day for those who want to better understand spiritual abuse and how we might create healthy Christian cultures in which coercive and controlling behaviours can be challenged.

Lisa Oakley will be leading this day. Lisa is Senior Lecturer in Psychology at the University of Chester. She is Associate Researcher with CCPAS (Churches Child Protection Advisory Service)  and is chair of the national group for child abuse. She is the author of Escaping the Maze of Spiritual Abuse: how to create health Christian cultures (with Justin Humphreys), being published by SPCK in 2019, and Breaking the Silence on Spiritual Abuse (with Kathryn Kinmond, 2013). She wrote an article in the Church Times last February https://www.churchtimes.co.uk/articles/2018/16-february/comment/opinion/understanding-spiritual-abuse
