Second Chair Leadership

Date: 23rd March 2019

Time: 10:00 - 16:00

Led by Tim Harle, Programme Leader for Christian Approaches to Leadership and Coordinator for the Centre for Leadership Learning at Sarum College.

A chance to explore leadership challenges for those who do not appear at the top of an organisation. With a grounding in theology, we will use the latest insights from organisational studies to explore how leaders, both individually and in teams, can help themselves and their organisations thrive.

Leaders are often assumed to be at the top of organisations. Relatively little attention has been paid to those occupying a second chair. The role may be clear, eg deputy head of a school or vice-chair of a board of trustees. But application in a church context – youth pastor, curate, deacon, Licensed Lay Minister – can raise questions of ecclesiology and approaches to ministry.

Second chair leaders are both leaders and followers. What personal and organisational consequences does this bring? And what if, despite talk of teamwork and collaboration, leadership remains a top down individual activity? Using Mike Bonem & Roger Patterson’s book, Leading from the Second Chair (Jossey-Bass, 2005), we will explore how second chair leaders have to balance broad organisational responsibility with narrower accountability in a particular area.

With a theological base ranging from Trinitarian thought to New Testament ministries, we will explore recent developments around zones of psychological safety. We will consider surprising insights from constructive dissent (the RAF) and intelligent disobedience (the Army). We will also investigate the role of inverse learning and reverse mentoring.

The day will be practically focussed, and suitable for both second and first chair leaders. Indeed, we encourage them to attend together.
