Chester Diocesan Mediation Service

An opportunity for people to access a mediation service, run locally within the churches. There is a group of volunteers from several denominations, trained as mediators with 'Bridge Builders', who have formed a North West network.

MediationConflict can be like the unwelcome visitors who turn up at just the wrong moment and outstay their welcome. It can threaten to destroy all that we are trying to achieve and can leave us feeling frustrated, attacked, isolated and stressed. If conflict is allowed to escalate it can get out of control and threaten to destroy us. We can be left feeling embarrassed and hurt; powerless to effect any real change Some disputes can be worked through locally, but others need outside help and advice.

"Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, they are a new creation; the old has gone, the new has come! All this is from God, who reconciled us to himself through Christ and gave us the ministry of reconciliation: that God was reconciling the world to himself in Christ ..." (2 Corinthians 5: 17 - 19)

What is the mediation service for?

Mediation provides an independent structure and forum to bring disputing individuals together to:

This kind of mediation follows a process which seeks to effect change rather than contain or manage a situation.

Who is it for?

The mediation service is open to staff members, leadership teams, co-workers, key volunteers, prominent church members etc.

What happens?

A mediator will contact each individual separately to outline the process and answer questions about mediation. Then, as soon as possible, the disputing parties are invited to work together face to face. A three hour time slot is set aside for the individuals to work with two mediators. Occasionally a further appointment may be offered if it proves both necessary and suitable. Levels of confidentiality will be agreed with the mediators at an early stage. Mediators may ask participants to sign a disclaimer as they will not give evidence to any possible disciplinary procedure of legal dispute.

What is required

A desire to try and find a positive way forward with the help of others, and willingness to listen / be open to understand the other person's position.
