Re-energising youth work
PARISHES that haven’t done youth work in the recent past are being geared up to engage in an innovative training programme. Anyone who is interested in working with young people (aged 11 to 25) should contact Diocesan Youth Officer Mark Montgomery, He said: “I believe that any parish can do youth work no matter what age or size of congregation. “The Diocesan Youth Committee is aiming to encourage youth work that is relevant to the size and the needs of each parish. “What a youth project brings to a parish is a transforming energy and vitality. Mark is also interested in hearing from parishes with a history of youth work which now want to develop something fresh. Those interested should Telephone Mark him at Church House on 01244 620444. The training programme marks a new phase in the Youth Office’s work and is divided into three parts. The first part is enabling parish to start of develop their youth programmes by providing such resources as training and literature. The second part is a commitment to providing youth e vents for all ages that builds up and strengthens the youth side of the parish community. And the third strand involves back-up support for parishes (including employment and volunteer worker issues) plus liaison with other agencies involved in youth work. Mark added: “I am very excited by this new project. It should re-energise youth work throughout our Diocese. “I am particularly pleased with the new range of training and youth events that we are able to offer from the New Year.” The training will take on a deanery by deanery basis and there will also be diocese-wide preliminary and intermediate youth work courses. The intermediate course, a Church College Certificate in youth work, will take place at the Warrington campus of University College, Chester. The course will be the equivalent of four university modules in a youth work degree. Events currently being planned for youth for next year include: football; a Quinta weekend away (for 11 to 14s); a new weekend away for the 14 to 18 age group; plus a major event for the 18-plus group (as yet undecided).
