The gift of a cow – from a Runcorn parish
WHEN it comes to giving practical aid to those existing in poverty in Africa, a church in Weston, Runcorn, has excelled itself. Parishioners of St John the Evangelist have beaten their own fund-raising target of £750 and used the money to buy a cow to send to villagers in Uganda. It was decided that a cow, plus funds for an enclosure and agricultural training and vetinerary costs, would be far the best form of help that could be given. The cow will supply calcium-rich milk for human consumption, manure for vegetable plots and urine for pest control. Any calves it has will be passed on to other villagers. Worshippers at St John’s were helped in their actions by a donation from Weston County Primary School and practical assistance from the charity Send A Cow. Priest in Charge of St John’s, the Rev Beth Gardner, said: “We have an abundance of food from the harvest in this country. But some families in African countries are struggling to find even the basic goods for every day. By sending our cow, we can help kick-start the local agricultural economies.”
