A new Rural Dean for Knutsford
THE Revd Canon Dr Roger Yates has been appointed Rural Dean of Knutsford, responsible for support and communications among priests and lay Anglicans within an area that stretches from Rostherne to Woodford. Before being called to the priesthood, he studied medicine and practised as a hospital doctor for several years in the Midlands. He is a highly qualified man with five university degrees. He also worked as a lecturer in pharmacology. He has done much clinical research in the past and worked on new treatments for migraine and cancers. In the mid 1980s he felt a calling to Christian ministry that he says was “too strong to ignore”. After training, he was ordained a priest in 1988. Canon Yates will continue to work as an assistant curate at St Bart’s, Wilmslow. In recent years he has also increasingly contributed to work in support of men and women who are training for the priesthood, particularly as Bishop’s Officer for Non Stipendiary (unpaid) Ministry. He said: “I am greatly looking forward to my new role as Rural Dean, helping the clergy and parishes of the Knutsford deanery. Canon Yates, 58, is married to Wendy, a retired doctor. They have a grown-up son, Michael, who works in London, and a daughter Karen, who works in Chester. Canon Yates’ hobbies include visiting new places ( preferably NOT travelling by plane), and particularly the unspoilt territories where the beauty of the world is best seen. He also revealed: “Wendy and I enjoy classical music concerts at the Bridgewater Hall, the occasional trip to the theatre and being partners playing rubber bridge.”
