A competition of beautiful, spoken words…
THE Diocesan heat of the annual Archbishop Cranmer Awards will be held at St. James’ Church, Gawsworth, near Macclesfield on Saturday 13 November, starting at 10am. Youngsters aged from 11 to 18 will give readings from the Book of Common Prayer (1662). Two winners, chosen from two age categories, will represent the Diocese in a national final to be held in February next year. The competition aims to encourage young people to read in church. It is sponsored by The Prayer Book Society, which promotes the BCP as containing “some of the most majestic and beautiful prose in the English language”. The Society says: “Over the centuries the BCP has been the repository of doctrine from which Anglican beliefs could be learned. A devotional power house, it is a deeply valued means of communication with our Maker.” This year our judges will include the Bishop of Stockport, the Rt Revd Nigel Stock, and the TV presenter and media adviser, Diana Mather. For further details of the Diocesan heat of the competition, please telephone Nigel Pearson, a schoolteacher and member of St James’ Church, on 01625 261502 or email him at thepearsons@tinyworld.co.uk (28/09/04)
