Pedal power and the ancient saints
YOUNGSTERS from St Peter’s, Waverton, near Chester, went on a pedal-powered pilgrimage from Bagnor Cathedral in North Wales, to Bardsey Island ,140 miles away, off the Welsh coast. The youngsters (pictured right), aged from 11 to 17, raised £1, 700 for Claire House Hospice for Children, Wirral, by their sponsored cycle ride. They were encouraged in their adventure by their parents and by the Rector, the Revd David Wilson. Parents helped by driving in cars as the support crew for the youngsters who cycled over very hilly terrain and through some atrocious weather to make the pilgrimage to Bardsey, which has been a pilgrimage destination for nearly 1,500 years. The island is reputedly the burial place of 30,000 Celtic saints from the days of the early church. The Revd David Wilson, vicar of St Peter’s, said: “The whole ethos of this trip was that the youngsters could enjoy this experience in the fullness of life while at the same time doing something very meaningful for very seriously ill children.”
