Life-enhancing events for older people
A CONFERENCE aimed at showing older people (in this instance, people over 45) how their lives can be enriched and how they can serve others is to be held at St Andrew’s Church, Cheadle Road, Cheadle Hulme, on Saturday, 24 October. And in November two special days, organised separately by the Diocesan Working Group on Older People and the Church, are to be held in Bramhall, Stockport, and Hoole, Chester, aimed at “thinking through how our Diocese can best affirm the talents and gifts of older people and give them support”.
The Cheadle Hulme conference, called “Goals in Extra Time” is aimed at opening up the rich potential of mature members of the churches. Those wishing to attend at St Andrew’s should contact the Overseas Missionary Fellowship (OMF) which is handling the bookings. Telephone 0161 434 3883. The conference, which lasts from 9.30am to 2pm, is organised by local Christians, working ecumenically in Cheadle Hulme and Manchester. A member of the organising committee, Sheila Grieve, who worships at St Andrew’s, said: “This conference will be bursting with ideas for how older people can enrich their post-retirement years and serve the Lord most effectively.” The event will offer talks, discussions and exhibitions showing older people how to use their skills and experience. The fee for attending is £10, and includes lunch. · “Is growing older a vacation or a vocation?” That is the theme of two special days for older people (in this case the over-55s) to be held on Wednesday, 10 November, at All Saints Church Centre, Hoole, Chester; and Monday, 15 November, at St Michael’s Church Hall, Bramhall, Stockport. There is no admission charge for these ideas-and-resources days. Those attending should bring their own packed lunches. Those intending to take part should telephone Jenny Dent at Church House on 01244 620444. (20/08/04)
