Honouring the Melanesians in Alderley Edge

TO celebrate the feast of SS Simon and Jude, companions and friends of the Melanesian Brotherhood are invited to attend a Melanesian Eucharist on Thursday 28 October 2004 at 7.30pm  in St Philip’s Church, Alderley Edge, followed by a bring and share supper in the parish rooms.

The feast of these saints is a special day in the Melanesian Brotherhood’s year. It is when novices become brothers and brothers may renew their vows.

Customarily, companions and friends all gather at the Brotherhood’s HQ in Tabalia on Guadal Canal in support of the brothers and a Holy Communion is celebrated by the Father of the Brotherhood, the Archbishop of Melanesia. After the formal ceremonies, there is a feast and singing and dancing.

In Alderley Edge both the Revd Brian Young of St Philip’s church and parishioners John and Mary Kempster are companions. They extend a general invitation to people in the Diocese to attend the service at St Philip’s. For further information, please telephone Barbara Molyneux on 0151 342 6327.

* Melanesian brothers (and some sisters) are coming to the Diocese for a second mission next year. A group of some 20-plus Melanesians are due to arrive in Chester at the end of April next year (2005), following the huge success of the previous visit in June 2000.

They are coming to update Christians in our Diocese about the continuing strength of the Anglican faith in the Solomon Islands.

The Anglican Province of Melanesia covers the Solomon Islands and Vanuatu. The Province has been linked with and supported by the Diocese of Chester since 1988. (12/10/04)
