Award for Macclesfield church

THE Rector of St Michael’s Church in Macclesfield town centre, the Revd Graham Turner (right) proudly shows off a national award won for the outstanding refurbishment of the church.

Architects Barlow, Wright and Phelps of Buxton, received the 2005 President’s Award of the Ecclesiastical Architects and Surveyors Association for their work on the church’s £1.4million refurbishment. The award means the architects get £500 and the parish gets to keep for one year a special silver chalice and paten in recognition of the good architectural design of the new structure inside the church.

Mr Turner, who is Team Rector of Macclesfield, said: “We are delighted by this. The new facilities have opened up the church to new groups within the community. St Michael’s Toddler group, for example, is very popular and we are considering starting an extra service to cater for their needs. We have also started a monthly lunch club.”

David and Christine Wightman, who manage the church facilities, said: “Since the building re-opened, the church is open almost every day of the week and we have welcomed large numbers of visitors, including many from overseas. It has become part of the tourist and heritage trail in Macclesfield.”

• Rooms within the church are available for meetings, exhibitions and other events. For  details please phone David or Christine on 07798 921265.
