Bishop David’s hospitable swing

THE Bishop of Birkenhead, the Rt Revd David Urquhart, is giving his strong backing to a hospitality scheme organised by local Christians in preparation for the Open Golf Championship coming to Hoylake on the north Wirral coast in July.

Church communities across the peninsula and from various denominations are to offer accommodation to golf fans.

Christians who join the Wirral Churches’ Hospitality Scheme (which is also backed  by Christians in Sport) will offer free B&B accommodation to visitors in return for a £25-per-night donation to a range of charities.

Bishop David said: “Churches in Wirral have given the fine tradition of Christian hospitality a modern twist with this project. It will bring great benefits to golfers, golf fans and good causes.

“The scheme will also help maximise the economic and tourism boost that the Open will undoubtedly bring to the peninsula.”

The Bishop has played golf since an early age, having been introduced to the sport by his father and grandfather at the famous course at Nairn in the Scottish highlands. He said: “These days, unfortunately,  I only get to play when I am on holiday … with an appropriate handicap.”
