Star-packed ‘Elijah’ for church choir

A CHOIR with strong links to two Diocesan churches, St. George’s Singers, is to perform with a major star of the opera world.

On Sunday, 28 November, the singers will perform Mendelssohn’s ‘Elijah’ at the Bridgewater Hall in Manchester – with Sir Willard White in the title role.

Soloists Mark Padmore, Sara Fulgoni and Mary Plazas also feature in the concert as does the Manchester Camerata.

St George’s Singers was formed in 1956 from about 30 singers of church music from the parish church of St. George in Poynton.

Today the choir has well over 100 members of all ages, coming from a wide area of East Cheshire, North Derbyshire and Manchester.

The choir rehearses on Tuesday nights at St. George’s church hall in Poynton and holds an annual singing day at the Poynton church.

The choir also has strong links with St. George’s Church, Stockport, and it performs there regularly.

* This season the choir will also be singing ‘Your Favourite Carols by Candlelight’ at St George’s Stockport on Saturday, December 11.
