Bringing a much-needed Christian approach to family life
JENNY GILLIES, our new Development Worker (Family Life and Social Concern), tells why some of the tough aspects of her previous job as a teacher will help in her new role ... “Normally, by this time of year I would in the thick of preparing students for their mock exams. “For the past 20 years, you see, I have worked as a teacher of English and, most recently, as manager of a secondary school’s department of personal, social and health education, helping students to learn about issues including citizenship, emotional well-being, sex and drugs education and importantly, matters surrounding family life. “This autumn, however, has been an excitingly different one as I eased my way into my challenging new role in the Diocese of Chester. My post has been created jointly by the Committee for Social Responsibility (CSR) and the Mothers’ Union (MU). “I haven’t left teaching because I hate it, though it certainly is a tough job, but rather because I believe God has drawn me to work with the Church, bringing some of my knowledge and experience to bear on the difficult issues facing families in modern life. “I’m also certain I will learn new things in my new role and I am delighted to be working in the Diocese of Chester. “Both the CSR and the MU share my own desire to support family life in the ups and downs we all face. “A Christian all my life, I was born in Devon, into a very close family, and I spent many years living and working in Lancashire. I am mum of two girls (aged nine and 13).”
