An international role for Birkenhead’s bishop

THE Bishop of Birkenhead, the Rt Revd David Urquhart, has been appointed Prelate of the Order of St Michael and St George. During a ceremony at Buckingham Palace, he was given his seal of office – which depicts St Michael the Archangel defeating Satan – by the Queen.

As Prelate, Bishop David (right) will preach an annual sermon to the order at St Paul’s Cathedral in London. The Order of St Michael and St George was instituted in 1818 by the Prince Regent (later George IV). Its membership is now largely made up of diplomats.

Bishop David was nominated because he has extensive overseas experience, being the chair of the trustees of the Church Mission Society and having worked in East Africa.

He said: “Apart from the annual preaching, I have to write a regular article for the order’s newsletter on Christian themes, particularly connected to members of the order who are serving or retired diplomats, and of course I pray for their work.”

The role also involves some foreign travel, which Bishop David enjoys. He plans future visits to Congo, and to China where he is to open a new theological college funded by the Church Mission Society.
