A chance to say our ‘goodbyes’ to Bishop David

A FAREWELL Eucharist has been organised for the departing Bishop of Birkenhead, the Rt Rev David Urquhart.

It will take place at St Saviour’s Church, Oxton, Wirral, on Wednesday, 19 July, starting at 7.30pm.

Bishop David is to become the new Bishop of Birmingham and will depart for the West Midlands in the near future to take up his new ministry.

The farewell was to have been held at Chester Cathedral but that is heavily book for music events this summer, so it will take place at Oxton’s parish church instead, which has been Bishop David’s local church since 2000.

Bishop David will preside and preach. All are most welcome to attend.  Clergy are asked to publicise this occasion in their parishes.

Bishop David said: “It is a great honour to have been chosen to serve as Bishop of Birmingham.

“But I shall be sorry to be leaving Chester Diocese, where I have made many friends and have enjoyed serving in the parishes of West Cheshire and Wirral. I have especially appreciated my contacts with schools and inner urban communities.”

The Bishop of Chester, the Rt Revd Dr Peter Forster, said: “David Urquhart has been an outstanding Bishop of Birkenhead. We shall miss him greatly.

“Our loss is very much a gain for the Diocese of Birmingham and for the wider Church.

“I have no doubt that David will prove to be an inspired choice as Bishop of Birmingham.”

“I am sure many, many people across our Diocese will wish to give him a farewell to remember, so do please come to Oxton to say your ‘goodbyes’.”

To find St Saviour’s Church, leave the M53 at Junction 3, take the second left travelling east along Woodchurch Road

Proceed along Holm Lane to the top of the hill, and turn left. Oxton parish church is prominently situated on the right after about 400 metres.
