New role for the Bishop of Birkenhead
THE Rt Rev David Urquhart, the Bishop of Birkenhead, is to become the new Bishop of Birmingham, Downing Street has announced. Bishop David, who has served as Suffragan Bishop of Birkenhead since 2000, said: “It is a great honour to have been chosen to serve as Bishop of Birmingham. “There are exciting challenges ahead in church growth and community regeneration. I am delighted to be returning to the West Midlands and to become part of a vibrant, forward-looking, international city. “I look forward to joining a diocese which is positioned strategically for God’s mission in the 21st century. “I shall be sorry to be leaving Chester Diocese, where I have made many friends and have enjoyed serving in the parishes of West Cheshire and Wirral. I have especially appreciated my contacts with schools and inner urban communities.” The Bishop of Chester, the Rt Revd Dr Peter Forster, said: “David Urquhart has been an outstanding Bishop of Birkenhead. We shall miss him greatly. “Our loss is very much a gain for the Diocese of Birmingham and for the wider Church. “I have no doubt that David will prove to be an inspired choice as Bishop of Birmingham.” Bishop David also has a new role as an envoy for the Archbishop of Canterbury to the Christian communities in China. He was appointed Archbishop’s Episcopal Link to China last month and will be continuing that work in addition to his new ministry as Bishop of Birmingham. Bishop David is no stranger to the West Midlands region, having worked in ministry at Holy Trinity, Coventry from 1992 to 2000. He also has extensive experience of overseas mission, and on a national level he chairs the trustees of the Church Mission Society and is a governor of Rugby School.
