Wesley art exhibit 2012 chester

An exhibition of modern Christian art will be held at the Wesley Church Centre, St John Street, Chester, CH1 1DA, from 22 September to 27 October, Monday to Saturday, 10am to 4pm. Some 35 pieces will be displayed, courtesy of the acclaimed Methodist Church Collection of Modern Christian Art.

Among them will be the one pictured here, a Dalit Madonna by Jyoti Sahi. The Dalits are the Indian people formerly known as ‘the untouchables’. Methodists have strong links with them in mission partnership and social justice campaigns.

Pieces range from life-size figures down to small, almost postcard-size pieces, and employ a variety of media – oils, watercolour, gouache and collage. Some are highly figurative, others much more abstract in character, but they all challenge the viewer to reflection and meditation.

The exhibition comes as the city centre Wesley church-café-and-shop complex ends of a year of celebrations to mark its 200th anniversary. There will be no admission charge for the art exhibition and repeat visits will be encouraged. Donations would be welcome though.

Volunteer stewards are needed urgently for the exhibition. Two briefing sessions are being held for prospective volunteers on Thursday 5 July at 2pm and on Thursday 12 July at 7.30pm, both at the Wesley. Phone Andrew Herbert on 01244 323037 or 07930 639246 if you would like to volunteer but cannot attend or need more information.
