Tractor and plough blessing

undefinedIt wasn't just the plough that was blessed at the Plough Service held at St Mary and St Michael church, Burleydam, south Cheshire, recently a tractor was too. Archdeacon Ian Bishop is PICTURED outside the church with Priest-in-Charge, the Revd Alison Fulford, her husband Ben, Joshua Swain (owner of the tractor) and two local children.

Plough Sundays are a traditional English celebration held in January to mark the beginning of the agricultural year. They usually involve bringing a ploughshare (or a small, full plough) into the church – and also prayers for the blessing of the land. The services have seen something of a revival in recent years.

The Revd Alison – who is also Dean for Women in Ministry – led the first part of the service at Burleydam. Archdeacon Ian celebrated Holy Communion and carried out the blessings.

This is the second year in recent times that Burleydam has held a Plough Service – and attendance was up. The event has sparked interest in the local community.
