River Dee baptism (Lache) June 2012

The baptism of Nikki Smith took place in the River Dee at Eccleston near Chester last month. Nikki had wanted to be baptised before her marriage to Corentyn Smith, who is at Chester University studying for a Youth Work degree and also on placement at Chester Cathedral.

Corentyn attended the baptism and so did Nikki’s friends from The Light Project where she has been a student.

The Light Project - which is based in Chester city centre and in Cambridgeshire – runs a variety of evangelistic projects, including outreach to homeless people, evangelism courses, schools work, street art, and city centre chaplaincy.

Nikki Smith (nee Andrews) had been on placement at St. Mark's Church, Lache cum Saltney, Chester, for the past two years. In September she is due to start as a part-time Children & Family worker for the parish.

Nikki’s river baptism involved sung worship and baptismal liturgy and was preceded by the anointing with oil. She was baptised on 25 June by the Revd Hennie Johnston, Vicar of St Mark’s. About a week later Nikki got married to Corentyn in Yorkshire.

Nikki devoted herself to serving Christ during her teens. It was her firm desire to be baptised in the Dee before she got married.
