Resources to boost support for credit unions

undefinedThe Archbishop of Canterbury commented a while ago about the need for a more ethical financial system and suggested that more should be done to promote responsible lending and saving. The Most Revd Justin Welby (pictured) also highlighted the value of credit unions to people struggling with finances. While that was interpreted as a ‘war on Wonga' by sections of the secular media, nevertheless the Archbishop sparked a much-needed focus in wider society on the need for justice in financial affairs.

That a modernised and expanded credit union sector could contribute powerfully to a fairer society has now gained wide acceptance – with many churches leading the way.

And in response to International Credit Union Day on the 17 October – or a suitable day around that date – the Church of England’s Mission & Public Affairs department has produced some generic resources for dioceses and parishes, which are now available at

There you will find a flyer, poster, fact sheet and press template, as well as more detailed guidance notes about credit unions and how churches can support them. Parishes are welcome to use and adapt these resources as appropriate – and there are spaces on the site to add your own message to that of the Archbishop’s.
