'REsdtore' arts plans Aug 2014

undefinedA new Christian community has started up in Crewe. ‘Restore' is part of the ‘Fresh Expressions' movement. The Revd Tim Watson is the leader of ‘Restore', which will have a focus on the arts and has an ambitious plan to open an arts centre in Crewe.

The group currently meets twice a week – 8pm on Tuesdays at 30 Oakhurst Drive, Wistaston; and 10am on Sundays in Costa Coffee in the town centre.

In the months ahead, Tim and the team have also set themselves the task of restoring the old Christ Church site in the town centre, to turn it into an arts centre and café.

Eventually the plan is that the arts café at Christ Church will be the hub of much of Restore’s community and Christian mission. The project will take a couple of years and is subject to obtaining grant funding, but the plan has strong support among local Christians.

The idea is to see many of the people in Crewe who currently have no church affiliation welcomed into a warm and vibrant community, and the project hopes to bring flourishing arts and Christian mission work to the heart of the town.

Christ Church was closed as a worship centre in 2013 while our diocese took time to consider its future use.

The Revd Tim Watson said: “It feels like a very long time ago when a group of us first gathered at Christ Church to pray about future possibilities for Christian mission in the centre of Crewe. Having continually sought God's vision for this venture, it was incredibly humbling when we first started our regular meetings and worship sessions this summer."

The Archdeacon of Macclesfield, the Ven Ian Bishop, has supported Tim and the team through the development of the plans.

The Archdeacon said: “Crewe is a great place with some wonderful ministry being done by the churches, but it is a community that struggles. We felt there was room for a very different sort of church experience and I hope that Restore will touch the hearts of the local community and allow us to connect with those who are currently not engaging with church.

“We are also aware that the closed Christ Church sends a message that things are bleak and we just don’t believe that. So we want Restore to be about both people and places.”
