undefinedA good way to educate children about the meaning of Christmas is by giving them a copy of the Real Advent Calendar 2014. Each calendar comes with a booklet explaining the meaning of Christmas story and Advent.

The calendar, which contains Fairtrade chocolate items for the various days of Advent, is part of the Christmas Starts with Christ campaign.

Behind window one on each calendar is the Christmas story / Advent activity book, which has a page for every day of Advent – the time of expectant waiting and preparation for the celebration of the birth of Jesus at Christmas.

The campaign aims to reverse the trend of recent years which has seen a fading of the knowledge of what Christmas is really about, especially among 5-7-year-olds, according to surveys.

The man behind the Real Advent Calendar is David Marshall, who some 11 years ago worked as Director of Communications for our diocese. He said: “' “By buying this advent calendar people can share the Christmas story throughout December. This is really important as we know that detailed knowledge of the Christmas story is very low amongst children and parents.”

David runs the Meaningful Chocolate Company, which also produces Christian-themed Easter Eggs.

Much of the money raised by sales goes to good causes. Last year the company donated more than £18,000 to the Children’s Society. This year as well as donatations to Fairtrade, the aim is to raise £10,000 to equip a baby clinic on the Kenyan island of Funzi.

Launching the 2014 calendar, TV presenter Diane Louise Jordan said: “This is a great opportunity to raise funds for The Funzi and Bodo Trust baby clinic in Kenya. The clinic is doing an amazing job by making sure people who are sick receive treatment and also offering new educational opportunities – which I hope will give children the chance of a better future.”

Schools who order the Real Advent Calendar will also get to use a range of ten special resources for use in classrooms.

The calendar is available in larger Tesco stores and at various independent retailers, priced £3.99.
