Melanesians 2013 update

RSS

undefinedThe Secretary of the Brothers of Melanesia, Alphonse Garimae (pictured), and his wife Beglin, have arrived in our diocese for a visit to Eastham parish, Wirral. They are staying with the Vicar, the Revd Beth Glover and have already attended a traditional fireworks display and been to two churches.

Eastham parish has raised funds for Alphonse and Belgin to make the journey. They will be here until 28 November, and are expected to discuss the bigger Melanesian mission visit to our diocese that's planned for next spring.

Beglin, a primary school teacher in Guadalcanal, Melanesia, will use her time here to gain professional experience in Wirral schools. She has now started her teacher exchange link in Millfields Primary School, Eastham. Alphonse is spending some time at the Partners in World Mission conference at Swanick in Derbyshire.

The couple have also attended a memorial service - as Alphonse lost his father recently, and Beglen, her nephew, a teacher from Selwyn College in the Solomon Islands. They found the service very moving.

Vicar Beth Glover has visited the South Pacific islands of Melanesia six times .Our picture (below) shows Beth wearing a traditional ‘bride price’ necklace presented to her in Melanesia for her services to women and to the Melanesian Brothers.

N.B. Sixteen Melanesians, brothers and sisters, will visit our diocese from 22 April to 13 May, 2013. A quiet time for refreshment and peace alongside them will take place between 1 and 4 May at Foxhill, our retreat and conference centre in Frodsham. This retreat will be part of the wider ‘Simply Living’ visit.

People are invited to join the Melanesians for a full day at Foxhill or for 48 hours, staying overnight with all meals provided. There will be a regular pattern of prayers throughout the day; plus quiet time, bible reflection and themed discussions.

The cost will be £15 for a day or £50 for 48 hrs. To register your interest please phone John Freeman on 01606 852872 or email jjcfreeman@talktalk.net Please note that spaces will be limited.
