undefinedA special day has been organised to encourage adults to get involved with schools and help young people learn and develop. It will take place on Saturday 11 October at Stockport Academy, Heathbank Road (just off the M56 and the M60), from 10am to 3.30pm.

The day of networking and resourcing is intended for all who want to improve their relationships with local schools.

The Bishop of Birkenhead will be the keynote speaker and there will be a choice of workshops and lots of expert advice. Several inspirational performance set-pieces will also take place.

For more information and to register for the Serving Your Local Schools Day phone Sandra James on 01928 718834 ext 223 or email sandra.james@chester.anglican.org

Come alone or bring a team – for fresh and practical help in serving your local schools.

The Revd Sue Mayo (pictured above) – former team leader of Christians in Schools Trust – is now a consultant with our diocese and is organising the day.

She said: “Schools and churches are really two pillars of each local community. The more they work together the more the community benefits. Schools, of course, do a fantastic job, but they don’t always have all the resources they’d like to have.”

Christians can do a lot to help schools, says Sue, who is also Assistant Priest at St Matthew’s church, Edgeley, Stockport.

Here are some examples that she gives of how people can assist. They can:

- commit to listening to children read for 30 minutes a week
- start a breakfast club
- offer to take Christian assemblies or run Christian clubs
- invite schools to come into local churches as part of the RE curriculum
- consider being a school governor.

Sue added: “Coming along to the Serving Your Local Schools Day will show churches just how effective input from local people can be for the schools and in building good community relationships.

“A good way to start this process is for church members to remember to pray for their local schools.”

Organisations from all over the country are coming to share how they can help local churches – including Scripture Union, Open the Book, Innervation Trust, The Message Trust, Prayer Spaces in Schools, Transforming Lives Together and more. Workshops during the day will offer practical help and support from a wide range of people from our diocese. Topics include Getting Started in Your Local School, Going Deeper, Assemblies and Collective Worship and Chaplaincy.
