Fairtrade Bake-Off Bishops' High School 2016

undefinedSix bakers from around our diocese gathered at Bishops' High School, Chester, to take part in a Fairtrade Bake-Off.

The contestants were: Bishop Keith Sinclair, Keith Ineson (agricultural chaplain), Viv Ley (diocesan president of Mothers’ Union), the Revd Christine Jones (Trustee of West Cheshire Food Bank), Paul North (School Chaplain), and Vanessa Burton (geography teacher).

They took on the challenge of making muffins using a range of Fairtrade ingredients, including bananas, chocolate, raisins, walnuts and coconut:

Student judges from Bishops’ High School were impressed with the bakers’ efforts, and sampled a range of recipes before choosing the winner. Vanessa Burton won with her creation of salted caramel sticky toffee muffins topped with toffee sauce.

The bake-off event launched Food Matters 2016 – an initiative co-ordinated by the Committee for Social Responsibility (CSR) that aims to highlight people's relationship with food and the importance of living sustainably.

Ruth Mock, our Family Life Officer, said: “The bake-off was a great event which highlighted the importance of supporting small farmers and producers by choosing and using Fairtrade ingredients.”
