Parishioner Montse Benitez - wife of former Liverpool FC manager, Rafa - unveiled the plaque. The parish has raised nearly 1 million over six years for the project through donations, grants and events.

Bookings from a wide variety of church and community groups are filling up the diary, from ante-natal groups to zumba classes.

The 19th century stone-built elements of the original centre and its linked Charles Dawson Brown Museum (for stone artefacts) have been renovated and incorporated almost seamlessly into the new complex.

Visitors see an exterior in harmony with the ancient sandstone church, and an interior full of light and up-to-date facilities. There are two large rooms plus a well-equipped kitchen, parish office, the museum and plenty of storage space. Solar panels adorn the roof and a there is a purpose-built FairTrade shop display.

The new Rector, the Revd John Bleazard, has seen the work through to completion and looks forward to the opportunities for outward-looking ministry that the centre provides.
