Winners of new community wards

Linda Mather (left) and Alice Boyer – two winners from the inaugural Brinnington Volunteer AwardsPictured are Linda Mather (left) and Alice Boyer - two members of Brinnington with Portwood parish, near Stockport - winners from the inaugural Brinnington Volunteer Awards. Linda, the parish centre manager at St Luke's, received the highest accolade - Volunteer of the Year award.

Alice received the Senior Volunteer Award for the work she does in organising events mainly for older people in the part of Brinnington where she lives.

Linda not only looks after the parish centre and volunteers an immense amount of time there, but she also looks after everyone who goes there. She takes people to see doctors, arranges help from Social Services, collects medications, and even visits people late at night when they ring needing help. She will try to get things people have need like a bed or piece of furniture, or a coat in winter and will deliver small items too. She is also a listening ear for many people. She does all this quietly in the background, seeking no reward or glory.

There were also several group awards, for which our parish centre volunteers were nominated, and among others nominated there were these groups who use the centre – Brownies, Toddlers, PEAR (people enjoying and relaxing – for older folk), a midweek group, and a tenants’ group.
