Bell Ringers' service in Bosley
The art of change ringing (campanology) will be demonstrated with hand bells and a model bell during this special service to be held at St Mary's Church, Bosley, south of Macclesfield on Sunday 29 July, starting at 10.30am.
Change ringing is a style introduced in England around the sixteenth century. Because of the constraints imposed by the physics of swinging bells, tunes are not played. Instead, the bells are rung in ever changing patterns to a steady rhythm.
St Mary’s is the only church within the joint benefice of Bosley, North Rode, Wincle and Wildboarclough to have a peal of bells. The heaviest bell (the tenor) in a peal of six bells weighs just over 5cwt. The bells are rung by rope and wheel and are housed in a steel frame on two levels within our sturdy tower.
Our picture shows Tower Captain Bill Dowse and Vicar Verena Breed in the bell tower at St Mary's.
During the service special hymns will be sung and there will be display boards about bell-ringing. Canon David and Lucinda Moir (both experienced and former bell ringers at Bosley) are expected to be at the service along with the Master of the Chester Diocesan Guild of Church Bell Ringers, Stefan Zientek, and other ringers from around Cheshire.
All who are interested in bell ringing and St Mary’s Church are welcome to attend the service.
